ARTISAN SPOTLIGHT:
AZUSA AMEMIYA

A studio visit with ceramicist Azusa Amemiya

Local New York ceramicist, Azusa Amemiya, enjoys the freedom of choice as a ceramist, and deeply understands how a beautiful piece has the ability to elevate the environment, on a table, or a moment in hand. Deliciously tactile, her pieces implore us to touch, explore and contemplate while embracing them as functional, everyday pieces.

Creating weekly out of a renowned studio in Long Island City, Azusa Amemiya is the master of experimental texture and redolent color. Each one-of-a-kind piece encourages the recipient to reach into the caverns of ones mind, drawing out memories of the natural world.

Azusa’s artistic philosophy is that each of her pieces are incomplete when they are purchased. It is not until the vessel is filled that the piece is ultimately finished.

Originally from Japan, Azusa moved to New York in the 1980s. Envisioning a brief stay of a few years, fate intervened and after starting a family, she and her partner decided to put down roots in the States.

It was around this time that she became interested in ceramics, throwing matcha bowls because she couldn’t find pieces she enjoyed using.  Initially, her inspiration and motivation was drawn from a desire to create beautiful pieces to use for her daily tea. From there, she deepened her craft through an exploration of color and texture with every piece made, understanding that no two are alike.

Azusa’s beautiful work reminds one of celestial bodies. A moon of Saturn, a ridge of Venus and evocative worlds yet to be discovered. Each piece, a testament to her dedication and artistic vision. From delicate teacups to striking vases, Azusa’s work transcends mere utility, inviting us to experience the profound beauty of handmade artistry.

Each piece of Azusa Amemiya’s work is uniquely one-of-a kind and available at Bellocq.
